Tactical Analysis

Deploying the best Italy XI of all time is not just a matter of choosing the most talented individuals: it’s about creating balance, harmony, and tactical identity while preserving the legacy of each era.

The formation I chose is a fluid 4-1-2-1-2 — a diamond midfield that emphasizes technique, intelligence, and variety across all departments.

Goalkeepers
In goal, I opted for Gianluigi Buffon over Dino Zoff — a decision dictated not by quality, but by the subtle nuances of style. Buffon’s longevity, his cat-like reflexes, and his extraordinary command of the penalty area make him a modern goalkeeper in every sense. While Zoff was an impenetrable wall in the ’70s, Buffon combined leadership with athleticism and ball-playing ability, a trait particularly useful in this side’s buildup.

Defense
The backline is a blend of elegance, toughness, and positioning. On the left, Paolo Maldini offers composure, pace, and the ability to neutralize any winger without breaking a sweat. He is the ideal fullback: world-class defensively, but also capable of supporting the midfield when needed. On the right, Claudio Gentile brings the necessary grit. A relentless man-marker, Gentile’s role is less about overlapping and more about nullifying threats.

At center-back, I opted for a duo that may seem unorthodox tactically, but is irresistible in terms of quality: Franco Baresi and Gaetano Scirea. Fielding two ball-playing sweepers might raise eyebrows, but the logic is clear — Baresi provides leadership, anticipation, and vertical passing; Scirea complements him with positioning, calmness under pressure, and the ability to glide into midfield when needed. Both can initiate plays from the back with precision — ideal in a team that values structured buildup over chaotic transitions.

Midfield
Andrea Pirlo sits at the base of the diamond, acting as a deep-lying regista. His role is to dictate the tempo, distribute with surgical precision, and offer verticality when needed. In front of him, two workhorses with contrasting profiles: Romeo Benetti, the destroyer, shields the defense with aggression and tactical discipline. Marco Tardelli, on the other hand, acts as a box-to-box presence — relentless in recovery, but also capable of arriving in the box and contributing with goals and link-up play.

The playmaker, naturally, is Gianni Rivera. The “Golden Boy” occupies the trequartista role — operating in the half-spaces, offering incisive passing and elegance on the ball. While players like Francesco Totti or Baggio were considered for this position, Rivera’s ability to operate as a pure conductor between midfield and attack made him the ideal choice for this lineup. His presence ensures continuity between phases of play, threading together Pirlo’s vision and the forwards’ movement.

Attack
Up front, the striking duo is all about contrast and complementarity. Roberto Baggio, the fantasista, roams between the lines, drifting left, finding pockets of space, and destabilizing defensive structures. Gigi Riva, by contrast, is pure dynamite: left-footed, powerful, and fearless. His runs off the ball and predatory instincts create constant threat inside the box. Together, they form a partnership that blends technique and finishing, chaos and order, elegance and raw forc characteristics.
