One of the most elegant and consistent full-backs of pre-war football, Paul Janes was a defensive anchor for Germany throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. Capped 71 times — a national record at the time — he combined tactical discipline with refined technique, offering both solidity at the back and precise distribution. Known for his set-piece ability, especially from the penalty spot, Janes was ahead of his time in terms of composure and ball control for a defender. A key figure in the so-called “Breslau Eleven,” his legacy remains that of a complete, reliable right-back who brought grace and intelligence to a role still rooted in physicality.
